International Space Station Program

The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest, most complex international scientific and engineering space project in history and our largest endeavor into space to date. Completed in 2011, the ISS is larger than an American football field including the end zones. The ISS serves as a test bed for building and maintaining large structures in space, for conducting science and technology research leading to discoveries that will benefit us here on Earth, and as a test bed for developments in future human space exploration. Boeing is supporting a variety of capability enhancements that will enable use of the ISS to be extended to 2028. Those enhancements include a new communications system for visiting spacecraft, a new NASA docking system, lithium-ion batteries for the solar arrays, improved life support systems, enhanced Payload experiment capability, software and avionics upgrades. In addition, Boeing supports processing of the laboratory experiment racks to facilitate experiments in space as well as ground system to support payload development and testing prior to launch.

Position Responsibilities:

This position is for an mid-career systems engineer in the ISS Development Projects organization. Responsibilities include project engineering, project management, requirements development, baseline management, integration, and verification. The engineer will apply systems engineering processes and methodologies in the area of project engineering. Typical tasks include:

  • Develops statement of work (SOW) to satisfy research and development, ongoing and new business requirements.
  • Responds to changes to SOW, assesses the impact and negotiates proposed changes to determine modifications to the deliverables, resources, costs and schedules.
  • Leads project execution to complete the work statement.
  • Identifies performance metrics.
  • Plans, identifies, and coordinates resources required over the life of the project or program.
  • Defines plans for risk mitigation and opportunity.
  • Compares actual results to baseline plan to assess project performance, efficiencies, productivity and lessons learned.
  • Provides technical, business and integration leadership for the development and execution of project or team plans.
  • Individual will support and participate in technical meetings with NASA counterparts, leaders, and technical staff.

Relocation assistance is not a negotiable benefit for this position. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a US Person as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required. US Person includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Minimum technical bachelor's degree
  • Must have experience with system engineering processes, particularly requirements development and project engineering
  • Must be capable of coordinating and communicating with multiple teams, including the NASA customer
  • Occasional travel is required

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • NASA experience is preferred
  • Project Management experience is preferred

Typical Education/Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (eg Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (eg PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
